Over the past decade, the number of SSPU students in Shanghai has almost doubled. To meet the increasing numbers of students, the university needs to change the program from time to time. Under such circumstances, how to design an engineering training center that can flexibly adapt to the future development of the university and meets the current needs become a design challenge.
After studying a series of plan prototypes, we finally select the strategy of the Pompidou Museum, which pushed out all public facilities (walkways, vertical traffic) in exchange for large internal spaces. In order to meet the changing programs, prefabricated sandwich boards are selected for space division. This choice makes the whole building flexible and more sustainable.
The prefabricated boxes (functioning as lounges) on the façade are the most challenging part of the project. To meet this challenge, our team and engineers work closely with each other. After studying the existing prefabricated plug-in technology in the Netherlands, the detailed were completed and finally submitted to Shanghai local manufacturers for feasibility study.
