Shanghai Jiaotong University Architecture Faculty is located in Minhang Campus. The Faculty used to share a laboratory building built in 1993 with Department of Civil Engineering. As an old building, which is mainly designed for small group study and research, its inner space can no longer meet the requirement of architecture study (which needs more space for model cutting, paintings, lectures etc.). In 2016, the university decided to take out the Department of Civil Engineering, renovate the whole building, and make it more suitable for architecture students.
Since many alumni studied in this building, we think it is essential to preserve the entire facade, which hosts a collective memory. How to build the self-identity and professional honor of architecture students through design is another consideration. Around the atrium we designed 4, floor to ceiling model shelves, it will not only increase the 350m2 storage space for outstanding students works, but also give visitors a profound impression.
For the interior, we try to design an atmosphere more fit faculty's own character. Unlike other Architecture Institutions in Shanghai, SJTU Architecture Faculty is small (60 students per grade), and located in the suburbs. Therefore to create a quiet and inward study space is more suitable for the whole faculty. Based on that, a clean and simple color board is needed. Concrete, terrazzo, silver paint, stainless steel... These materials form the background of the interior. Minimalist design furniture ( black, wood color) are selected to help students establish a basic aesthetic taste.
We expect the project looks clean and simple, like a canvas that provides a platform for creative design.
